S H A M E is deepest of human emotions. Detrimental but morality shaping.
Shame is often incorrectly called embarrassment. It is not the same in fact. Embarrassment is an emotional state. Shame is more complex emotion. It is a painful, social emotion.
The presence of shame is the absence of love or the loss of love, and leads to the destruction of self-esteem. Shame is a genetically inherited painful emotion. The most intense shame leads to humiliation. Shame may result from the awareness of guilt but apparently is not the same thing as a guilt. It’s a painful feeling about how we appear to others (and to ourselves) and doesn’t necessarily depend on our having done anything. Embarrassment has a lower value of suffering but it plays an important role in social life. It creates a framework that leads the individual to acceptance by society.
